Abstract

A Critical Approach to Ibnu’l-Arabi from the Perspective of Imam Rabbani

Ibn al-Arabi is known as the greatest teacher and şeyhul ekber of the theorectical suffism. On the other hand, Imam Rabbani is one of the pioneers of Naqshabandi and the reformist of the second millenium. Sirhindî criticizes Ibn al-Arabî and some aspects of his doctrine of wahdat al-wujud. His critiques on wahdat al-wujud depend on the following statements: Being (al-wujud) is an attribute additional to essence (dhât)); attributes are not identical but additional to the essence; the distinction between the real being and the shadow one is not imaginary, but a real distinction; the ultimate end of the sufi experience is not the unity of being, but the unity of witnessing. I think the traces of the political, religious and social structure in India when Sirhindî lived may be found in the background of Sirhindî’s criticism of the theory of wahdat al-wujud. For he worries that wahdat al-wujud provides the Project of uniting the various religions with a suitable background. Therefore, this attitude of his can be understood only through taking the socio-cultural conditions into consideration. In addition to this, Imam Rabbani criticized Ibn al-Arabi in respect of several mystic concepts such as revelation/inspiration, saint-prophet (nubuwwa), saint an seeing of God.
