Abstract

The Metaphor Ox in Mawlana’s Mathnawi

The metaphor ox is generally used for meanings of animal and carnal qualities such as eating, ‎drinking, sleeping and sexual relation. In our essay, we will seek answers of main question in ‎which meanings Mawlana used the metaphor ox. In this case, we will investigate and try to ‎understand the metaphorical meanings which he had attributed to ox, such as self, livelihood ‎worldly property, person who conform to his self as suiting his animal emotions, hypocritical/two-‎faced person, false sheikh (head of a derwish order), person uninformed of spiritual/sufistic ‎truths, person who not pay attention to call of prophets and saints and lover.‎
