Abstract
Abū al-Ḥakam Ibn Barrajān (?−536/1141) was one of the leading Sufi-scholars of Andalusia. His ancestors were from the Maghrib. They entered Andalusia during the emirate of al-Mu‘taḍid ‘Abbād Ibn Muḥammad (rule: 434/1042–451/1069) of the ‘Abbādīs (414/1023–484/1091). Ibn Barrajān was probably born in Ishbiliyya (Seville) in Andalusia. Along with Abū al-‘Abbās Ibn al-‘Arīf (d.536/1141), he was a close follower of the Ibn Masarra (d.319/931). Although there is no consensus among the sources, it is understood from what AL-DHAHABĪ (d.748/1347) says that because of his suspected potential oppositional power, he was arrested by Sultan ‘Alī Ibn Yūsuf al-Tāshufīn (rule: 500/1106537/1142) of the Almoravides. He was subsequently imprisoned and died in prison in the year 536/1141, a date generally accepted by the scholars. His works include Sharḥu ma‘ānī al-Asmā’illāh al-Ḥusnā or Tarjumānu lisān al-Ḥaqq and Tafsīru Ibn Barrajān or al-Irshād fī l-Qur’ān al-Karīm. In his works Ibn Barrajān frequently referred to ‘waḥdat of kathrat’ (unity/oneness of multiplicity), and ‘al-Ḥaqq al-Makhlūq Bih al-samāwāt wa-l-arḍ’ (the Divine Reality through Whom creation of heavens and earth take place), a notion that occupies an important place in renowned Sufi philosopher Muḥyī al-Dīn Ibn al-‘Arabī’s (d.638/1240) teaching. He also emphasizes secrets and features of letters and numbers, that is, he uses the science of letters.
